Why video telematics the next step in tackling driver distraction
Trucks and truckies from all across New Zealand made their way to Christchurch for the 2018 Trucking Industry Show last week. The two-day event celebrated the hard work and community spirit that define the trucking industry.
For the past 25 years it’s been our mission to help transport companies in NZ and abroad streamline processes, boost health and safety at work and save on costs. In short, we know trucking. We went along to chat with customers, showcase our NZTA-approved, electronic RUC Manager system, and took part in this excellent event.
From truck rides and classic trucks, to bouncy trucks and competitive relays, here are five highlights from the Trucking Industry Show 2018 :
1. Safety MAN Road Safety Truck
Bringing together the best road safety technology and highly-trained truck drivers, the Safety MAN Road Safety Truck was a highlight of the Trucking Industry Show. This initiative led by the NZ Trucking Association runs education programmes in its trailer unit.
The Share the Road with Big Trucks programme educates road users on how to share the road safely with heavy vehicles with 12 everyday situations such as pulling out, cutting in, wet weather, overtaking, and using high beams. Drivers and managers can upskill with Healthy Truck Driver programme on workplace health and safety issues, with practical advice on fatigue and how to be physically and mentally fit to do the job.
As well as educating event goers, the truck showcased some of the latest safety gear and technology for heavy vehicles, including our GPS tracking technology for driver behavior monitoring and improvement.
2. New Zealand’s biggest Truck Show and Shine
State-of-the-art light systems, polished chrome, customised decal, distinctive contours and immaculate paintwork – the Truck Show and Shine was the place to be for motor vehicle connoisseurs.
New Zealand’s largest Show and Shine featured modern trucks and classic trucks from around the country, all vying to be the best. Check out this year’s ‘truck of the show’ below.
3. T[RUC]king
Road User Charges (RUC) can be a burden, with difficult paperwork, monitoring, and fines for not topping-up in time. But they don’t have to be.
We exhibited RUC Manager , and demonstrated how to streamline the entire licensing, monitoring, and rebate process. Using RUC Manager, you can reduce paperwork and lodge accurate off-road rebates to have money flowing back in.
4. Trucking Relay Competition
The Trucking Relay was a new addition to the Trucking Industry Show. Teams of four competed in four challenges – picking their specialist for backing, loading and tarping – then finishing up with all four pulling a large vehicle for 10 metres. The teams were judged on speed and accuracy.
This fast and friendly rivalry asked Kiwi drivers to put their skills to the test. It provided audiences with competitive entertainment as well as an accomplished display on how to operate trucks safely and effectively.
5. Careers Showcase
For event goers who were looking for a career change or about to start work, the Careers Showcase offered the opportunity to learn about careers in the transport industry.
Attendees were introduced to different career pathways through the various organisations attending the event. This included technology companies, diesel mechanics, truck sales representatives and more. The hands-on initiative provided insight into not just the opportunities of today, but also future career pathways in the industry.
