Challenge:

Energyworks runs a substantial fleet of vehicles. The vans and mini vans are used to transport staff on site for the large scale shutdowns of power stations, while the utes are used daily by maintenance staff to get to the various job sites. Energyworks and its staff are a through and through Taranaki organisation, born and bred, and act like a family – the team genuinely care about the health and safety of its staff and needed a solution that would help make sure they get home safe at night. They also needed a solution outside of logbooks to manage after-hours driver activities to not violate Fringe Benefit Tax conditions for vehicle usage. With specialist expertise and a very good health and safety record, they needed a key tool to help run the business more efficiently that would also help them expand.

Teletrac Navman is now a key tool to help us run our business more efficiently and will help us as we expand. Since the installation we’ve had an 80% reduction in over-speeding. The data from the software has enabled us to make decisions on how to manage and improve speeding behaviour.

- Travis McGrath, Chief Financial Officer

Solution:

Drivers are often working 12-14 hours during maintenance work on statutory shutdows of power stations, so Energyworks looked to Teletrac Navman’s GPS fleet management solution so they can check where any of the vehicles are at any time of the day or night. They updated their policies and have been able to have discussions with staff to help ensure safety, especially with reoccurring offenders. Some have even reduced speed when driving their own cars with their family, something that has pleased the Energyworks team. They opted to put a Teletrac Navman unit in each vehicle to ensure drivers are not using vehicles for private use as they are not paying Fringe Benefits Tax – logbooks would have taken up a lot of time.

Energyworks is also using the reporting functions to keep an eye on repair and maintenance needs for the fleet, and look after registrations, warranting and RUC so the fleet manager can plan work that needs to be done. The team has the software up on a big screen in the office so the operations team can keep an eye on the whole of the Taranaki region with the little green dots representing the vehicles.

Results:

The implementation of Teletrac Navman has led to several significant benefits for Energyworks:

  1. 80% reduction in speeding events
  2. Offset fuel savings and maintenance costs
  3. GPS tracking keeps drivers safe and alerted at all times
  4. Improved their compliance with Fringe Benefit Tax conditions for vehicle usage
