Every year Brake Safety organises the Road Safety Week as a way to encourage all New Zealanders to help keep our roads safer. Brake Charity notes that: “from safety technology in vehicles, to speed limits that reflect the safety of the roads, we can all step up to learn about, shout about and celebrate these proven solutions”.

Teletrac Navman’s fleet management software is one of these solutions. Our software has been proven to increase not only driver safety but the safety of other road users. You can read about how George Weston Foods reduced overspeed incidents by 48% over three months with our technology here.

For this year’s national Road Safety Week, Teletrac Navman joined Brake Charity’s call to ‘Step up for Safe Streets’ by sharing road safety tips on social media to help raise safety awareness. But because every week is about road safety, we also wanted to share the tips on our website as a permanent reminder to the safety tips below.

Road Safety Tip #1: Limits are limits, not targets.

Reduce your speed. Slowing down gives you much more time to react to people and hazards around you.

Help make our communities safer by looking out for changes in traffic, road and weather conditions, and reduce your speed accordingly.

Road Safety Tip #2: Drive distraction-free

Road safety affects all of us. If you think you can multi-task at the wheel, you're kidding yourself and putting others in danger.

Driving is one of the most complicated tasks many of us do on a regular basis. It requires our full concentration, and both our hands, to drive safely.

Road Safety Tip #3: Avoid driver fatigue

Fatigue is a major safety hazard for all drivers. Even a split-second mental lapse can result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Here are some simple steps all drivers can take to avoid fatigue:

1) Have a long trip coming up? Plan ahead. Ensure you are well-rested beforehand.

2) Always listen to the warning signs - if you’re feeling tired at the wheel, pull over somewhere safe as soon as you possibly can. Only continue your journey when you're feeling fully refreshed.

Road Safety Tip #4: Consider the conditions before you hit the road.

Slow down and always maintain a safe gap behind the vehicle in front: If visibility is poor or roads are wet, it will take you longer to react to hazards. The gap between you and the vehicle in front is your braking space in a crisis.

Road Safety Tip #5: Don’t take risks

If you’re not a 100 percent sure of your surroundings – don’t overtake! In the video below you can see a driver crossing a yellow line and overtaking a truck at a blind corner.

This carries big risks for not only the driver, but everyone else on the road. A good reminder to never take risks on the road.

Road Safety Week aims to inspire communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the Week and beyond. It also provides a focal point for professionals working in road safety to boost awareness and engagement in their work.
