Teletrac Navman and Road Transport Forum Celebrate Women in Transport

One freight-focused female will be awarded the inaugural ‘Outstanding Contribution by a Woman to the Road Transport Industry Award’ at the sector’s biggest awards night presented by Road Transport Forum on 25 September. This year’s Gala dinner will be held at Wairakei Resort in Taupo.

The new award, sponsored by Teletrac Navman, recognises successful and committed women in the transport industry and promote their career achievements for wider New Zealand to see.

The award will go to a woman whose actions both enhanced the reputation of the road transport industry and encourage the advancement of other women in the transport workforce. This could be through female-specific training programmes, advocating for women-friendly policies in the workplace or mentoring other women.

Today’s industry offers a very wide variation of careers and many traditional barriers-to-entry have been removed. Women have told us that technology advancements, such as air-operated covers and lone driver safety devices, make jobs in the industry more accessible for them – and safer too. So, it’s a great fit for us as a telematics company that services the transport industry.

Sharing real stories of women in the road transport industry can change people’s old perceptions of the industry. There are so many skilled women working in all layers of the industry from driving to logistics to leading the company. This award is a great way to place a spotlight on some of these women.

When announcing this new award, Road Transport Forum chief executive Nick Leggett said, “Promoting diversity and inclusion will help with a sustainable supply of workers.” New Zealand’s driver shortage in the road transport industry has been well-documented in the media. By recognising the achievements of women in the road transport industry, we hope to spread the message that road transport industry has various rewarding careers for women within the industry.

The ‘Outstanding Contribution by a Woman to the Road Transport Industry Award’ is now open for nominations on the Road Transport Forum website! Remember to include some background on the business the woman you’re nominating works for and how long she has been with the company.
