Civil Contractors: Have Your Say in the 2019 Construction Industry Survey!

For the third year running, Teletrac Navman and CCNZ are undertaking research into the civil construction industry through the 2019 Construction Industry Survey.

It’s open to complete via this link from 2 – 17 May. 

Every completed survey goes in the draw to win one of five $100 Prezzy cards.

The 2019 survey asks questions around the impact of key events and issues, workforce challenges and changes, apprentice positions and construction technology. It’s a chance for industry voices to be heard – giving all New Zealanders a snapshot into the trends, issues and opportunities facing construction businesses.

The 2019 survey results will be discussed by an expert panel on 2nd August at the CCNZ Conference in Rotorua. The results will be used to better promote the industry’s interests and concerns to media, local and central government.

In 2018, major news channels such as Stuff , RNZ and The AM Show included results around margins and procurement from the survey in their news articles. Along with the survey data, Peter Silcock, CCNZ’s Chief Executive gave interviews on the challenges facing the construction industry and voiced the sector’s concerns with procurement processes and risk allocation.

Issues and opportunities

From climate change and sustainability issues, to changes in education and policy, New Zealand businesses are faced with operating in a continually changing climate. The survey asks for feedback on the impact that a number of issues and events have on civil contracting firms. The survey looks to gauge the temperature of the industry in terms of how much growth is expected, and where contractors are looking on increase their capabilities in the coming year.

Workforce

Across many industries in New Zealand, staff and skills are a major topic of interest. The civil construction industry in particular needs a very wide range of technical skills and educational backgrounds to design, manage and build large scale infrastructure. This is the largest section in 2019 with questions around staff numbers, staff training, apprentices and barriers to staffing. With a historically low unemployment rate, changes to the immigration skills lists and a focus on education paths, understanding the construction workforce is important for decision makers.

Mental health and wellbeing

A spotlight has been shone on New Zealanders mental health in the last couple of years. One of the CCNZ conference key note speakers in 2019 is Mike King. A renowned comedian and mental health advocate, Mike King was the 2019 winner of New Zealander of the Year award for his work in raising awareness of depression, alcohol and drug abuse and suicide. The survey asks how prepared contractors are to deal with mental health issues in the workplace and what additional help would suit your business needs.

Technology

Technology changing the way construction is done. Massive leaps are being made in 3D mapping, aerial drone imaging, computerised excavation, GPS tracking, telematics and more. We want to know which technologies kiwi contractors are most interested in adopting. The survey also looks at the people-side of technology in terms of who manages new tech and how train staff with new software.
